Fun and energy down South

This Friday Jenny and I head on down to Invercargill - a city tucked into the southern most part of New Zealand.  Mayor Tim Shadbolt is a colourful character and has done much to raise the profile of this city with his humour and energy.  Come to think of it, is this what can raise the profile of Rotary?  
The fun and humour we enjoy is contagious.  This is the very substance of the enjoyment we receive amongst like-minded people every time we meet.  And energy is only present in a group of Rotarians when they have a purpose and a focus - especially with community centered projects.

Southland here we come

It will be fun going to Institute.  It will be even greater fun meeting up with many dear friends.  Finally the energy we will gain as we meet up with our future leaders incoming RI President Ron Burton will be not only enjoyable, but will also raise the profile of Rotary in New Zealand.

Public Image presentations will be made at both Institute and Governor Elect Training sessions.

Women's expo selling engagement!

Yes I did feel a little strange.  I was the only male in sight as I lined up with Jenny to enter the Women's Expo in sunny Wellington this morning.

Once inside the crowds were showing real interest in a variety of displays from foot massage, to diet products, Belgium Chocolate and Stoneware cookware.  But right in the middle of the crowds and the excitement was a stand promoting Rotary.  

Handouts were being given to interested women stating:

"People like you and me - active in our communities and loving it!"

The message being passed on to potential rotarians was:

Would you like to:

• Meet other motivated people - a chance to make new friends?
• Network with like minded professionals?
• Make a real difference by getting involved in the local community?
• Help local and global initiatives to make a better world?

Join the many women in Rotary who are having fun making a difference!

I've been thinking...

What is it about successful Clubs that make them attractive to new members?

What is it that they have that other Clubs don't?

Do we have enough motivation to ask this question and indeed to take the time to investigate further?

My belief is that there are several reasons that cause a Club to be attractive to others.

My list includes:

• The members are actively involved in a variety of relevant projects
• The members are proud of their involvement in Rotary
• The members are confident to ask others to join - and actually ask!
• The community know where and when the meeting of Rotarians are held
• The members have an effective public relations programme promoting their activities
• The members have fun and this emits an attractive energy

So when we think of turning a Club around and making it attract new members, think about those Clubs that are successful and start emulating them.

Rotary is "A happy group of good sorts doing heaps of good things for others"
