Boy - the Rugby World Cup final last night was a nail biter!!
So close but in the end New Zealand came out on top 8-7 against a strong challenge from France.
There is always a winner and a loser in these sports fixtures but when the dust settles and the bodies recover, we will be able to see there will be many winners.
To me I was amazed at the international friendship and the friendly competition. New Zealand saw so many visitors come and enjoy our country and our people. Jenny and I have made lasting friendships with Carol and Malcolm Christie from Port Alfred, South Africa. They were staying with us for 10 days as part of the Rugby Home Hosting Programme which has raised further funds for the End Polio Campaign.
Rugby has been a winner - with many watching and enjoying the game they never used to watch.
The other observation has been around the whole marketing campaign and the profile the game has received through the World Cup. I know Rotary is not about to stage a 'world cup' but it is soon to be part of an even bigger celebration as we End Polio on our planet. Are we ready for the maximising in the profile we as an organisation can gain through this life saving achievement?
I believe we are moving in the right direction to increase our profile in the community. We are taking a hard look at our branding. Rotary International have commenced work to remove the clutter around our numerous 'images' based on our various programmes and to give a more consistent image to the public. Another move it is increase the funding for Public Image initiatives - the increased PR Grant funding is now starting to come through to those Districts who have applied for funding. Finally, the appointment of Public Image Coordinators again provides a good coordination and focus to ensure we are active.
But in the end the best and most effective 'marketing' of our brand is the one to one contact Rotarians make with those they come in contact with each day.
For those Clubs not doing this and wondering why their membership numbers are decreasing, take a lesson or two from the Rugby World Cup. The enjoyment, the international friendship and the excitement of the game has lead to millions taking part. Our Clubs can do the same marketing our good work and the fun we have in being part of Rotary - otherwise those Clubs not doing this will have every reason to bite their nails.
