Tawa Rotary has enthusiastically adopted a project to give new
dictionaries to primary school students. This aligns with Rotary
International’s world-wide drive to support "literacy development".
Since 2009, Tawa Rotary has given to each Year 4 student at Hampton Hill and/or Linden Schools their own copy of a quality, hard covered, Usborne Illustrated Dictionary, as its contribution to the programme. In the first instance, Rotary has chosen to distribute these dictionaries to schools that have a proportion of students from low socio-economic communities.
This project is seen as a way to encourage the Year 4 student’s reading with their own named dictionary. Tawa Rotary hopes that not only will the child benefit from the dictionary but, by taking it home, the whole family will get used to it – particularly if they don’t have many books in the home.
Rotary International has more than 1.2 million members with 34000 clubs worldwide. Last year over two million dictionaries were distributed in the USA and approximately 20,000 throughout New Zealand. The project has been taken up in other countries as well.
