“Cyclone Ian” a category 5 compact but
powerful cyclone (the first cyclone of the 2013-2014 summer South Pacific
cyclone season) has left at least one person dead & a small Tongan group of
Pacific Islands devastated after it hit Saturday January 11, 2014.
Pangai an historic Tongan town of 2,000 people
has been left in ruins by one of the most powerful cyclones to hit our South
Pacicic Island neighbours and the fate of another 5000 people nearby on the 17
occupied Ha’apai Islands is still uncertain.
PDG Stuart Batty Director of Rotary NZ World
Community Service (RNZWCS) advises –
“We have Emergency Response Kits (ERK’s)
pre-positioned ready for distribution in Nuku’alofa & are working with the
NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade & Red Cross”
"Emergency Response
Kit's are a highly practical & proven way of providing humanitarian
assistance throughout the Pacific region in times of disaster. I encourage
Club's to continue to support this program throughout the year in readiness for
the next natural disaster which we know will strike our Pacific neighbours at
some stage."District Governor Deb Gimblett - July 29, 2013.
