Our hearts go out to our Pacific community

Following the devastation of Cyclone Evan there is now the risk of disease in Samoa as they struggle to recover.
David Wilson is a passionate Rotarian who works tirelessly to raise the profile for Emergency Response  Kits which are being used to help the pacific island families return to some form of normality.  He writes:

"This Emergency Response Kit Project our RC of Eastern Hutt started as the Emergency Box way back in 1983 is still very much alive, needed & appreciated by the many recipients after disasters in the Pacific Islands as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade through NZ Aid who has been a major sponsor.
You will be pleased to learn that our RC of Eastern Hutt has now donated a total of $ 4800 for 8 ERK's this Rotary year to date..
As well to help those who have just been effected with "Cyclone Evan" in Samoa & Fiji the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade have announced today December 18, 2012 transfer of $ 100,000 to RNZWCS Ltd for replenishment of Emergency Response Kit Stocks. "

– Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General

“Rotary’s PolioPlus program is a shining example of the achievements made possible by cooperation between the United Nations and nongovernmental organizations.”

“Through my contact with Rotary, I learned about the importance of community service. The Rotary motto of Service Above Self has left a deep impression and has guided me since. I would like to express my profound gratitude to The Rotary Foundation for having given me that unique opportunity and a solid foundation that eventually led me to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, a global service organization to protect those fleeing from armed conflict and persecution.”

Increased profile needs action

Do you want your Rotary Clubs to increase their profile?  Is there a real drive to heighten the awareness of Rotary in your community?  Are Clubs keen to increase their membership?  Is there a desire to get serious about attracting new interest in our organisation?

A solution.

Encourage your Club to adopt a high profile project - providing a fresh focus, new energy and public presence.

One such project is the GlobalRun4Water project which is going viral!
Be part of a global group of Rotarians raising funds for water projects by involving the community.  The web site contains practical advice as to the how to go about creating an event.

Lets make a big splash for Clean Water!

A basic human right??

Water is a basic human right, yet 900 million people lack access to safe water and over 2.5 billion have no safe sanitation. That’s why water & sanitation is a key focus area in the new Rotary, because where there is water there is peace, health, education, and economic development.  That’s why WASRAG, the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group, adopted the slogan “Start with water.”
We encourage every Rotarian to become familiar with the world water issues, both at home and in other parts of the world.  Every Rotary club should get involved in water and sanitation projects; and through multi-district and multi-club partnering we can together achieve so much more.
Money and expertise are keys to success, so are active Rotary clubs involved in raising funds and awareness. That’s why I endorse the RotaryGlobalRun4Water and encourage clubs around the world to embrace this simple but powerful formula.  It is an easy way for clubs to get involved with water in their local community and support meaningful grant projects. With broad participation in such a multi-district fundraiser we can foster partnerships, raise the exposure of Rotary, and most importantly make a significant difference in the cause for clean water.

The fight is on to completely eliminate polio from the planet

Rotary is continuing the fight against polio and the media need to spread the word.
Rotarians - tell your other Rotarian friends and tell your community.
We are 'this close' to stamping out polio and need a concerted effort to finish the job!

The world needs to know!

A water project - let's turn on the tap!!

Posted on my Facebook page today!
From RI:  Take a look at the fantastic global team already assembled to support this event! http://www.rotaryglobalrun4water.org/about/

 What can we do?
First:  Decide to act!  Get involved!  Encourage your Club to have a Water Project.
Second:  Link into this global initiative - and raise money by creating a community event.  It will increase member engagement; enhance the profile of your Club in the community; add to the efforts of so many others who see the value of clean water
Third:  Get other Clubs involved!!  This is an exciting initiative - with many positives and people willing to give advice on possible water projects.  Spread the word.
And now on Rotary Showcase!!

Giving to the community today in New Zealand

Karori Rotarian has a check up
Today Rotarians across the country in New Zealand  joined forces with the Stroke Foundation, St Johns and Foodstuffs supermarkets to front the "Down with Blood Pressure Campaign".  Members of the community were provided an opportunity to have a free blood pressure check.

I believe Rotary needs to form greater partnerships and collaborate more with other community organizations to enable our service organisation  to contribute even more to the good of society in the future.

The pressure is on in New Zealand

The Stroke Foundation, assisted by St John Ambulance and Rotary, has teamed up with Foodstuffs supermarkets (New World and Pak N Save) again to offer the tests as part of its annual awareness campaign. High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for stroke and regular testing is the best way to spot the danger and get help in keeping your blood pressure healthy.

Free blood pressure tests for shoppers – Saturday 12 May 2012

Get a free blood pressure test on Saturday at New World & PAK’n’SAVE supermarkets. High blood pressure is the biggest single risk factor for stroke and most people don’t even know what their own pressure is. The Stroke Foundation with St John, Rotary and Foodstuffs supermarkets is offering free checks this Saturday 12 May. It’s quick and painless and it could save your life! See http://www.stroke.org.nz/stroke-blood-pressure-campaign for details of participating supermarkets.

Rotary Global Run 4 Water

We will raise money so we can support Rotary Water Grants which will help supply clean drinking water to the less fortunate people around the world.

Listen to the passion of one Rotarian who is playing his part to improve the quality of lives for many.  Is this not why we are Rotarians?
