Solomon Islands Update - DONATE NOW

This disaster is looking like the biggest in the region since the Tsunami that struck Samoa in 2009.
There is a desperate need for basics such as kitchen utensils.  There are none available in any of the stores there, and people whilst they can cook on open fires, have nothing to cook in. In fact there is little basic stock of anything available and if there were, the people most affected have no money to purchase.
12,000 people in evacuation centres have nothing to return home to. Chaos abounds in the sector with some agencies trying to shut others out.....no coordination...... no management - just self interest.

Rotary NZ World Community Service (RNZWCS) has been in touch with their Australian counterparts (RAWCS) overnight who have substantial donantions in most states and they will dispatch kitchen utensils etc. with urgency.  Rotary Australia’s AquaBox, (similar to New Zealand's Emergency Response Kit) and coordinated efforts are underway.

All Rotary clubs should support our Pacific neighbours by contributing to RNZWCS when disasters such as this occur.

UPDATE – THURSDAY April 11, 2014

Rotarians in Honiara, Australia and Fiji are working togetner. Contact has been made with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and it is hoped to have ERKs on the next RNZAF flight – no date set.

Rotary Fiji have obtained space on Fiji Air out of Nadi and pre-positioned Rotary New
Zealand ERKs are being sent from there. Rotary Australia have confirmed they will send a pallet load from their complimentary AquaBox supplies. Rotary Australia also to send supplies of kitchen utensils from their DIK warehouse.

President Aldrin, Rotary Honiara yesterday advised RNZWCS that a member has tragically lost a son who was swept away by the flood waters and to date his body not
recovered.

which is encouraging. In consultation with President Aldrin, funds raised in New Zealand will go towards rehabilitation of health centres and schools.

Youth Service brings vitality to Rotary - thanks 9970 RYLA

RYLA is a great opportunity for Rotary to engage with ‘Youth Service’ the now renamed Fifth Avenue of Service, New Generations having been dropped by the 2013 CoL.
Stef Banbury, one of the three people sponsored by Christchurch Sunrise Rotary on the D9970 RYLA course and an employee of Canterbury Television (CTV), has put these clips together to record the events that occurred.
The course with 43 attendees from throughout the District, was held at College House one of the Halls of Residence associated with Canterbury University in late January 2013 and was run on behalf of the District by the Sunrise Club.
A number of the attendees, aged between 18-24 are in employment, with a relatively even spilt in gender. A number have committed to becoming further involved in their communities with a strong base in Christchurch interested in developing and forming into a Rotaract group.
Tomorrow you will see the second clip!

So, why TV?

Rotarians in New Zealand are supporting the current Television campaign which is being broadcast across our nation.  To support this there is evidence that New Zealand has an excellent cost advantage to other countries around the world.  Read more here ...

When you compare New Zealand’s cost per thousand (cost to reach a 000 audience in Peak) to other developed markets in the Asia Pacific the numbers are astounding; We are 70% cheaper than Hong Kong, we’re 60% cheaper than Australia and we’re more than 40% cheaper than Singapore. Just older and wiser!

Well - how about some entertainment before our birthday tomorrow.  We often say we need to update our image, we need to market to a new group of potential Rotarians and we need to think about our relevancy.  Well just look at this.

Same message - same group - just older and wiser!

Whose father was the lead singer of the Diamonds circa 1957?
Who knew! And hasn’t he aged well.  Tom Hanks father - this is amazing!!!

This is so great. I didn't know Tom Hanks’ father was the lead singer of the Diamonds.

THIS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE,

If you were alive in 1957, and old enough to enjoy Rock and Roll, you will probably remember the group, "The Diamonds"  who had just launched their super hit "Little Darlin' ".

For you that are too young to remember - it was a time when the performers were happy, enjoying themselves, respecting their fans, dressed appropriately and their lyrics could be understood.
They did not feel obligated to scream, eat the microphone, mumble inaudible lyrics or trash the set.  In 1957, The Diamonds had a hit with "Little Darlin". 47 years later, they were requested to perform at Atlantic City ...

This link leads to both performances.
Watch the first one then scroll down for the new one 47 years later.
In the linked videos Tom Hank's father is the lead singer on the left with the high-pitched voice. He still has it! Hope you enjoy.

Fun and energy down South

Mayor Tim Shadbolt - known for his
energuy and humour
This Friday Jenny and I head on down to Invercargill - a city tucked into the southern most part of New Zealand.  Mayor Tim Shadbolt is a colourful character and has done much to raise the profile of this city with his humour and energy.  Come to think of it, is this what can raise the profile of Rotary?
The fun and humour we enjoy is contagious.  This is the very substance of the enjoyment we receive amongst like-minded people every time we meet.  And energy is only present in a group of Rotarians when they have a purpose and a focus - especially with community centered projects.
Southland here we come
It will be fun going to Institute.  It will be even greater fun meeting up with many dear friends.  Finally the energy we will gain as we meet up with our future leaders incoming RI President Ron Burton will be not only enjoyable, but will also raise the profile of Rotary in New Zealand.

Public Image presentations will be made at both Institute and Governor Elect Training sessions.

Polio - the final push!

Rotary’s Polio Promise
More than 25 years ago, Rotarians made a promise to protect all children from polio.  We are committed to achieving our goal of a world that is certified polio free.

Our History
Polio has crippled and killed children for thousands of years. Today, we can effectively prevent the disease through vaccination. Worldwide, the number of infections has declined by more than 99 percent. But polio persists in three countries:  Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. More than US$9 billion has been invested in global polio eradication, but more is needed to reach children in these places and prevent it from returning to other countries.
Visit endpolionow.org to find out how you can join us in fulfilling the promise of a polio-free world.

What Ending Polio Means to Me

  • My children and grandchildren are healthy and safe.
  • Thousands of kids who might have been paralyzed will be running and playing.
  • I’m part of an effort to eradicate a disease that has killed and crippled children for thousands of years.
  • A polio-free world could provide net benefits of at least $40-$50 billion if polio transmission is stopped within the next five years.
