GlobalRun4Water kicks off in NZ

A great walk today as we raised money for a Fijian water project. A great turn out and the weather has been brilliant. Family, friends and partners joined members of Port Nicholson to take in the glorious views of Breaker Bay and surroundings. Some even walked with 4-8 kilos of water in their back pack.
The profile of Rotary was promoted with the banner and a passer by asked me what the group was doing.  I was able to explain that Rotarians we were raising the awareness of the need to support water projects globally and that men and women were to mobilise in the next two weeks to 'GlobalRun/Walk4Water'.   I wish all the other planned events every success.

Plan to plunge in 2013!

We held a wonderful world wide project in  February.  This was the Rotary Global Swimarathon - driven out of an English Rotary Club at Grantham.
Not only was the image of Rotary promoted but a world record was achieved by having the most people swimming simultaneously around the world.

Why not plan for your group of Rotarians to get involved in February next year.  It is fun, it is for a worthy cause (raising funds for water projects), it involves all ages and it raises the profile of our wonderful organisation.

Connection - knowing the good we do!

As Rotarians, do we know what wonderful work that is being done in our own backyard?

Water projects seeking sponsors…
Rotary NZ regularly receives requests from Tanzanian Rotary clubs seeking support for installation of rainwater harvesting systems in schools and communities. The projects are managed by local Rotary clubs who have partnered with many New Zealand Rotary clubs over the past 15 years. Stuart Batty would be pleased to hear from any club or Rotarian wishing to sponsor such vital projects. Non-Rotarians are also contributing to a number of these projects through donations to Rotary New Zealand.

Here's some VERY exciting news

In just 18 days time, on September 6th, voting opens on Chase Community Giving. Water Team International the Rotary Water Grants charity run by our event founder George Lewis has been nominated for a share of a $5 million giveaway. Its very simple - the more facebook votes received , the bigger the share, with the top award of $250,000. This is an annual event, and last year 30,000 facebook votes (LIKES) was enough to secure the top amount. If EVERYONE in this event group votes and invites their friends and contacts we are confident of securing over 50,000 VOTES. Clean water has global attention

Warwick Pleass reports: "Rotarians in Fiji are organising a walk / run either on Friday 21st September or Saturday 22nd to coincide with the DG Ron Seeto's visit and a water project opening.

It will be (approximately) the Rotary Pacific Water For Life Foundation's 170th project completion in 4 years since inception, helping about 55,000 people at an average cost of roughly USD $25 per person. A very accomplished ongoing project."

A basic human right??

Water is a basic human right, yet 900 million people lack access to safe water and over 2.5 billion have no safe sanitation. That’s why water & sanitation is a key focus area in the new Rotary, because where there is water there is peace, health, education, and economic development.  That’s why WASRAG, the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group, adopted the slogan “Start with water.”

We encourage every Rotarian to become familiar with the world water issues, both at home and in other parts of the world.  Every Rotary club should get involved in water and sanitation projects; and through multi-district and multi-club partnering we can together achieve so much more.

Money and expertise are keys to success, so are active Rotary clubs involved in raising funds and awareness. That’s why I endorse the RotaryGlobalRun4Water and encourage clubs around the world to embrace this simple but powerful formula.  It is an easy way for clubs to get involved with water in their local community and support meaningful grant projects. With broad participation in such a multi-district fundraiser we can foster partnerships, raise the exposure of Rotary, and most importantly make a significant difference in the cause for clean water.

 What can we do?

First:  Decide to act!  Get involved!  Encourage your Club to have a Water Project.

Second:  Link into this global initiative - and raise money by creating a community event.  It will increase member engagement; enhance the profile of your Club in the community; add to the efforts of so many others who see the value of clean water

Third:  Get other Clubs involved!!  This is an exciting initiative - with many positives and people willing to give advice on possible water projects.  Spread the word.
